Google Translate App Has Been Downloaded Half A Billion Times On The Play Store

Google Translate is one of the most useful services out there alongside Maps and other Google-powered services. Recently, the Google Translate app for Android hit a milestone: 500 million downloads on the Play Store.

For an application that may or may not be preloaded on newer Android devices, that is such a huge step and shows just how popular Google’s language translation service is.

Google Translate allows users to translate over 100 languages and use the camera apps on their phones to translate in a “Word Lens” (it really is Word Lens anyway) style for nearly 3 dozen languages.

The Google Translate app was updated a year ago to work inside any app installed on a device (Tap to Translate). Users also got the ability to look up translations while offline for over 50 languages.

In October 2015, Microsoft announced its own Android translator app, Translator, which allows users to translate text in 60 languages online and offline as well as using the camera (a la Word Lens).
